Mastering Equations – The Key to Quick Math Thinking!

Let's talk about math equations—those number puzzles that help us add, subtract, multiply, and divide like pros! Solving equations is a big part of math, and it’s super useful in real life too. Ever shared a pizza with friends? Or counted how much money you need to buy something? That’s math in action!

What’s an Equation?

An equation is like a math sentence that asks us to find the answer. It has numbers, symbols, and an equal sign (=) that shows both sides must be balanced. For example:

◉ 8 + 4 + 9 = ? → We just add the numbers together to get the answer!

◉ 7 + 12 × 11 = ? → Uh-oh! There’s multiplication too! Which part do we do first?

That’s where the order of operations comes in!

The Secret Code: Order of Operations

When solving questions on mathematics, we don’t just go from left to right. We follow a special rule called PEMDAS (or BODMAS in some places):

🟡 PParentheses first (solve anything inside brackets first).

🟡 EExponents (not in our game yet, but good to know!).

🟡 MDMultiplication and Division (solve from left to right).

🟡 ASAddition and Subtraction (solve from left to right).

Let’s Try One!

What is 7 + 12 × 11?

1️⃣ Step 1: Follow the Order of Operations

According to PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication & Division, Addition & Subtraction), we do multiplication before addition.

So we start with:

12 × 11 = 132

Now the equation becomes:

7 + 132

2️⃣ Step 2: Add

Now we add:

7 + 132 = 139

Answer: So, 7 + 12 × 11 = 139

We multiplied first, then added — that’s the correct order!

If we had added 7 + 12 first, we’d get the wrong answer! That’s why following the order of operations is so important in addition quizzes and reflex math.

Let’s Try Another One!

What is 2 × (7 - 5)?

1️⃣ Step 1: Solve the Parentheses First

According to the order of operations (PEMDAS), we always solve what's inside the parentheses first.

So:

7 − 5 = 2

Now the equation becomes:

2 × 2

2️⃣ Step 2: Multiply

Now multiply the two numbers:

2 × 2 = 4

Answer: 4.

We solved the parentheses first, then multiplied. That’s the correct way to do it!
